Martin Debřička (*1989) is a saxophonist, improviser and composer, based in Prague.
Saxophone happened to be his initiation tool, he plays soprano, alto and tenor saxophones along with recent explorations into clarinet and bass clarinet.
He explores a diverse array of approaches to music, sound and musical composition. Lately, his focus has been primarily on experimental and improvised music, sometimes intersecting with other performative arts.
Some of the compositional techniques he likes to work with are graphic scores, unconventional notations, conceptual ideas and open scores, microtonality, dodecaphony (and other serialistic or determinative systems), reductionism or rhythmic music ideas.
He pursued his education at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in jazz and a Master’s degree in jazz/composition. He also studied classical saxophone, composition and pedagogy at Pilsen Conservatory of Music and West Bohemian University.
He composes music for a few ensembles made up of musicians he likes to collaborate with. Some of the current bands/projects he has founded and writes music for are – the trio Jungle Debris, sextet TONGU, saxophone quartet MMMM, electroacoustic project DWONU or Martin Debřička SOLO.
